The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
