A recent study suggests that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying these medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
